Enhancing Language Learning Through Music And Musicon In Early Childhood Education

The Challenge:

How can we help young children learn a new language—or even two—in a way that feels as natural and joyful as singing a song? Traditional methods can be stressful, but we know from neuroscience that the parts of the brain that process music and language are deeply intertwined.

Our Approach:

In our Erasmus+ project, “The Symphony of Language,” we are exploring this powerful connection. Our goal is to enhance early language acquisition by integrating music directly into the fabric of our daily learning. To do this, we partnered with the “Akademia Smyka” kindergarten in Poland, who are experts in this field.

The Discovery: The Musicon and the Magic of Sound

The heart of our project is the Musicon, an innovative and award-winning musical instrument designed specifically for children. It’s not just a toy; it’s a powerful tool for learning. When children play with the Musicon, they are not just making noise; they are:

  • Developing Auditory Skills: They learn to distinguish between different tones, rhythms, and sounds, which is the foundational skill for differentiating the sounds of a new language.
  • Building Fine Motor Skills: Pressing buttons and turning gears strengthens the same muscles and neural pathways needed for clear speech.
  • Making Learning Tangible: They can literally “see” and “touch” the music they create, making abstract concepts like rhythm and melody concrete and understandable.

This musical instrument was purchased by LANA Tallinn International Kindergarten with financial support from the European Union (Erasmus+) under the project ‘Music as a tool for improving young children’s language learning skills’ (project no. 2023-2-EE01-KA210-SCH-000170004), which took place from 2023 to 2025. In Estonian, the project title translates to: ‘Muusika kui vahend väikelaste keeleõppeoskuste parandamiseks’.

The Impact in Our Classrooms:

At LANA, music is not just a background activity; it is a core language of learning. Guided by the methods we’ve developed in this project, your child will:

  • Learn English and Estonian through engaging songs, rhythmic games, and musical storytelling.
  • Build Confidence by expressing themselves through sound, even before they have all the words.
  • Develop a Sharper Ear for the nuances of language, making it easier for them to acquire new vocabulary and correct pronunciation.

In 2023-2025 we are have created  a series of 10 sample lessons on how to teach language through music, which will be available to educators everywhere. By pioneering this approach in Estonia, we are ensuring your child benefits from a playful, effective, and scientifically-backed method for becoming truly bilingual.
